ABSTRACT
This thesis is an analysis about human characters, especially about the motivation
underlying the action. People have their own reasons to act or not to act. The reason or motivation that directs their activities can be classified into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
To support this study, the writer uses the motivation theories from Zoltán Dörnyei, Houston, Yelon and Weinstein, Lester and Alice Crow. The writer also uses other theories related to the topic which are gathered from books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and websites.
The object of this study is the novel entitled the Campus Melody by Anne
Emery. The purposes of the study are to describe the intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation of Jane as the main character of the novel to achieve her goals.
The writer uses a descriptive qualitative research as a method of her thesis
because the data are in the form of utterances in written words and they are analyzed descriptively. The procedures of collecting data in this study involved several steps. First, the writer reads the novel repeatedly. Second, the writer draws and identifies sentences that show the goal, effort, and motivation of the main character. Third, the sentences are classified into goal, effort, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation.
The result of the analysis is the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of Jane Burnaby. The intrinsic motivation relates her interest in music, achievement, loneliness, curiosity, and love. While, the extrinsic motivation relates to the external factors like the social and financial reward, the attitude of her family, and the happenings that influence her to do something or to be someone.
By studying and analyzing Anne Emery’s Campus Melody, the writer expects
the novel to be involved as a subject in the literary class since it has several values in motivation to be delivered to students. Moreover, the background of the story relates to the students real life that is about the life of a freshman student who lives far from her family. The writer also expects readers not just read the novel but also apply good motivation found in the novel because motivation is the base of human effort to reach his or her goal. And it would be better if the act is not only based on intrinsic motivation but also extrinsic motivation.
