ABSTRACT
The main objective of this final project is to determine the students’ recognition mastery of passive voice of the second year students of SMA N 11 Semarang in the academic year of 2004/2005. This study was carried out under to consider that passive voice is one of the most important topics of the English subject both according to the curriculum and in terms of real life communication. Therefore, students should master the topic well.
The whole population of this study was 135 second year students of SMA Negeri 11 Semarang. In order to get 40 students out of 135 students to represent the population as the sample, random sampling was used in this research. The instrument of the test was prepared with a combination of multiple choice and sentence-typed items. To measure the validity and reliability, the instrument was tried-out. After being analyzed and revised, 40 test items were administered to the sample students. The result of the test served as the data of the study.
In this study, the use of passive voice involved a number of tenses, that is simple present tense, simple past tense, simple present perfect, simple future past, and simple present with modal auxiliary “can”.
Based on the data analysis, the percentages of the students’ mastery of passive voice are: 31.0% fail level, 31.0% weak level, 33.3% satisfactory level and 4.8% good level.
The conclusion is that the second year students of SMA Negeri 11 Semarang in the academic year 2004 /2005 have not mastered the passive voice, based on the curriculum. The low score above mean that the teaching and learning of English grammar in SMA Negeri 11 Semarang should be reviewed. The result of this study should be useful for the betterment of the teaching of English in the school especially the teaching of passive voice.
