ABSTRACT
The topic of the research is The Effect of Using Classical Music on Students’ Motivation in Reading Comprehension (The case of the year eleven of SMA Ibu Kartini Semarang). In conducting this research, the writer has an objective that is to find out the effect of using classical music to motivate the students in reading English class.
The research used a quantitative analysis of which questionnaire and reading comprehension test were used to collect the data. In order to achieve the objective of this research, the writer designs an experimental research. The population of this study is the year eleven of SMA Ibu Kartini Semarang. The number of the subject in this research was 73 students. The 36 students in the experimental group were taught reading comprehension using classical music strategy and the other 37 students were taught reading comprehension using conventional strategy. The reading comprehension list consisted of 5 passages, each passages had 6 multiple-choice items.
Before the test was used, it has been tried out first. The main purpose of conducting it was to find out the validity and reliability of the reading comprehension test and questionnaire as the instrument. The writer has also revised some test items before they are used as the instruments of this research.
The result of this research shows that the experimental group gets better scores than the control group. The writer mentioned that the control group average score on motivation was 65.95, while the experimental group was 70.64. The same was true to the control group average score on reading comprehension was 64.65 and the experimental group was 75.89. It means that there is a significant difference in grades in reading comprehension test achieved by students who have been taught using classical music from those taught using conventional strategy.
In line with the results: the writer suggests that classical music to be used as an aid to teach reading comprehension. The purpose is to create a situation that makes students interested in learning English.
