ABSTRACT
This final project is an analysis of the relevancy of the materials in the textbook ‘Grow with English Book 5’ published by Erlangga as an additional textbook to School- Based Curriculum. Textbook is an important source used in teaching and learning process. So, the teacher must be selective in choosing textbook. Realizing its importance, he/ she has to analyze the contents of the textbook before deciding to use it as a resource in teaching learning, whether it is relevant with the curriculum or not.
The objective of the study is to analyze the relevancy of the textbook ‘Grow with English Book 5’ with Standards of Contents. So, a descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. The data were collected from the textbook ‘Grow with English Book 5’ written by Mukarto and friends, published in Jakarta.
The materials were matched to the Standard of Contents. The discussion was focused on the relevancy of the materials, evaluation, and kinds of evaluation. From the analysis, it was found out that one basic competence was not provided in the textbook. On the other hand, there are some irrelevant materials provided in the textbook.
The relevancy of the textbook is 96%, with the relevancy of listening materials 100%, the relevancy of speaking materials 91.6%, the relevancy of reading materials 100%, and the relevancy of writing materials 100%. It is suggested that the authors of the textbook should use Standards of Contents as a reference in writing their textbook; the materials of the different semesters should be separated, and; the author should show the basic competence applied in the syllabus or table of contents of the textbook. If the textbook is not complete enough, the teacher should find the materials that do not exist from the other sources.
